Message from the Department Chair

Hurson

Greetings from the Computer Science Department, Missouri S&T and welcome to the department web site.  Calendar year 2009, so far, has been another successful year in the history of this department.  The growth and expansion of our undergraduate and graduate programs are on schedule.  Our distance program is growing and relative to the fall 2007 the size of our PhD program will be tripled in fall 2009.

Faculty scholarly activities and productivity in terms of professional activities, publication, and funded research continue to grow. About 80% of our faculty members received additional funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of Education (DOE), Air Force, and Department of Defense (DOD). I am also extremely pleased to report that all of our new junior faculty members received external seed grants for their research activities. Consequently, in spite of the tremendous growth of our PhD program, more than 75% of our PhD students are receiving financial support from the department.  Several faculty members were recognized as outstanding teachers by receiving teaching awards.

Our new “Pervasive and Mobile Computing Laboratory is under construction and shortly operational.  The existing “Experimental Computational Laboratory” will find a new and improved home by the end of summer 2009.

In April 2009, we also recognized achievement of Dr. Cindy Tang by inducting her in to the CS academy.  In addition, three new members from Cerner, Garmin, and IBM were added to the CS advisory Board. I personally welcome all of them and am looking forward to working with them in years to come.

Finally, we have been extremely busy generating the required report for our upcoming ABET accreditation visit scheduled in fall 2009.

The department will be initiating three fund raising campaigns to:

            Establish a “distinguish speakers” program,

            Create several graduate fellowships, and

            Construct a state-of-the-art technology center.

During this time period that we, like others, are suffering from the economical hardship, I am seeking and expecting generous financial support from our alumni to continue our growth and accomplish the aforementioned campaigns.

This web site is the principle medium to keep you informed about the department and our achievements. However, I am available via e-mail or simple a phone call away from you!  I hope to hear from you.
