Missouri University of Science and Technology
Computer Science Department
Professor & Department Chair
The Computer Science Department at the Missouri University of Science and Technology (S&T) invites applications from dynamic and visionary individuals for the position of Department Chair. The successful candidate will guide the department in directions that will further elevate its national and international stature as well as enhance the success of its students, faculty, and staff by achieving departmental and campus strategic visions. The successful candidate should demonstrate exceptional skills in recruiting and retaining a diverse group of faculty, promoting collaboration, demonstrating superior written and oral communication with all stakeholders on and off campus, creating the conditions necessary for faculty and student development and creativity, acquiring campus resources essential for department growth, mentoring junior faculty, and seeking external resources for program enhancement through fund-raising efforts. A proactive and collegial individual is sought with emphasis on being a “servant leader” who creates excellence in, and balance between, the teaching, research and service missions. A PhD in Computer Science, or a closely related area, with a demonstrated track record of scholarly accomplishments, effective teaching, and overall academic leadership is required. Candidates from national labs or industry with a strong research record coupled with academic and administrative experience are encouraged to apply as well. The Chair must have the qualifications and standing to be appointed as a tenured full professor in the department.
The Computer Science Department has a proud 50-year history of advancing the quality and breadth of its educational mission, and grants ABET-accredited BS, as well as MS and PhD degrees. An active recruitment strategy has resulted in the department now being one of the largest on campus, with over 700 students (607 BS, 70 MS, and 38 PhD). Special emphasis on recruiting female and under-represented minority students has been highly successful: for instance, the number of female students has grown significantly over the last five years. A productive, experienced set of 19 TT/NTT faculty are engaged in the advancement of knowledge in key growth areas including computational intelligence & computer vision, mobile & distributed systems, cyber security, social-cyber-physical systems, pervasive computing, and big data & internet of things. Furthermore, the research focus on Smart Computing is at the core of S&T’s Smart Living Signature Area. Research expenditures have more than doubled from 2012 to 2016, with a wide variety of federal and industrial sponsors. The department has searches for two new faculty members currently in progress. The department has 3,957 successful and engaged alumni, and is strongly supported by the Academy of Computer Science, a 39-member organization dedicated to developing key programs of the department with financial support, and active engagement and advocacy. The department also has an active Industrial Advisory Board that provides feedback to ensure the curriculum remains relevant to industry and that our graduates have the capability to apply CS principles in innovative ways, and to provide financial support. The department is particularly proud that over 1001 recruiters sought Computer Science graduates this academic year, including multiple national labs with whom we have long-established hiring pipelines as well as funded research collaborations.
Further details on required and desired attributes, skills and characteristics of the successful candidate, and the department's visions and strategic plan, activities, and research may be found here.
